Publisher Kongregate announces $10 million fund for indie developers

Indie publisher Kongregate has announced that it will create a $10 million fund to help developers create games for both PC and console, as it attempts to expand cross-platform publishing.

Kongregate has previously launched an investment fund with the launch of its mobile game publishing arm back in 2013, again for $10 million. The program launched over 30 titles including the popular AdVenture Capitalist, which also found its way to console. The publisher is now hoping to repeat that success on PC and console platforms.

“We want to bring great games to gamers around the world, no matter what platform they play on,” said CEO and co-founder of Kongregate, Emily Greer. “We started as a web platform for flash games, expanded into publishing mobile games with great success and want to continue that momentum for both PC and console publishing. We want indie developers to know that we will support them on any platform they choose to launch their games on, and will work with them to identify which platforms and audiences will be the best fit.”

The move to publish on PC and console will include both paid and free-to-play titles and hopes to provide the same benefits to developers as its mobile arm does, with analytics, marketing and certification support. GRIDD: Retroenhanced has already launched on Xbox One and Steam and a new title from Peter Molyneux, The Trail: Frontier Challenge, is due for release later this year.

Kongregate’s own platforms have grown massively since the company formed in 2006 in San Francisco. Its web platform hosts 100,000 free to play games and its mobile releases have hit 100 million downloads.
