Surprise VR game release includes full source code and mod support

Oculus Rift dropping $200; Robo Recall available now for free

During Epic’s GDC Keynote, there were a couple of big announcements for VR fans. Brendan Iribe, CEO of Oculus VR took to the stage to announce that the Oculus Rift and Touch controllers have now dropped in price by $200 to $598 for both. That’s a chunky drop in price. This makes the Rift a much more tempting offer for developers looking to start working in the medium, as well as gamers who haven’t jumped on board the VR train yet. And there are many of them.

Adding a cherry to the cake of temptation (as if there is any other kind), Epic has just released its VR robot-em-up Robo Recall for free to everyone. Surprise! It can be downloaded along with the full source code to poke around inside, and will fully support mods. So whether you’re a hardened VR veteran (VeteRan?) or a newbie to the medium, this is a great jumping off point to truly make Robo Recall your own.

This cements Epic’s belief that VR is the real deal as we move towards an AR future, with Tim Sweeney telling us he expects 12 billion AR devices in the hands of consumers in the next 12 years. Practical applications of this will extend beyond games, of course, but with the game and film industries working so closely now, the line between all of these applications will begin to blur. And those with a solid foundation of knowledge in VR now will be key to determining the direction in which this moves in the future.
