Sony’s gaming earnings up 35 per cent for 2017

Sony Global published its financials earnings this morning and the gaming side of its business appears to be performing rather nicely.

The ‘gaming and networking’ arm of Sony’s business is up 35 per cent year on year for this quarter (July-September), which includes Sony’s PlayStation hardware, games and its PlayStation Plus service. All of this comes under the Sony Interactive Entertainment division banner.

The 35.4 per cent increase in sales works out at 485 billion Yen, which works out to around $3.6 billion. The sales performance has been buoyed by the PlayStation console with the total units shipped (including the original, slim and Pro models) is now around 67 million. In the last two quarters alone, over 7 million units have been shipped.

Another area that has helped this sales increase is game sales on the system and in particular, via its digital PlayStation store, although no figures were given. It certainly echoes the feelings on UK retail that has seen a decline in sales, which analysts believe is indicative of a shift to digital sales.

The increase in revenue is also down to a shift in the financial markets. With the Yen performing well against the Dollar, the Euro and the Pound, this has only helped increase the value in Sony’s native Japan, which is noted in the earnings release.

The gaming division could well continue to rise, with the rush to 4K over the next year boosting sales of both televisions and consoles like the PS4 Pro, along with a line up of exclusives that are landing in early 2018, it will be interesting to see how the next three months pan out for Sony
