President of Sony Interactive Europe, Jim Ryan, wishes that there were more PS4 Pro consoles available when it launched last year. That’s according to an interview with The Telegraph newspaper from this week’s Paris Games Week.
The interview looked back on the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro mid-generation console last year, amidst the current market which has seen Microsoft’s play for 4K gaming about to release. "If I had my time again I would have asked the factory to have made a few more," Ryan said to The Telegraph’s Dan Silver. "For the first six or seven months it was really rather hard to find one which I feel sorry for the people who couldn’t find one for that time. Just over one in five of the PlayStation 4s we sell now is a Pro which is a figure that exceeds our expectation Equally there are a lot people who are just buying straight into the Pro – more of those than we expected."
The interview also looked to see how a new console would perform, but Ryan refused to speculate on the possibility of a PS5 in the near future. "Having launched Pro last year in 2016, we wouldn’t bring something like that to market if it was only going to have a life of 12 months," Ryan said. "Clearly it’s with an eye to helping prolong the life of the PS4."
PlayStation and Sony have had a big presence at Paris Games Week and Monday’s conference has been much debated for featuring two trailers with adult themes – Detroit: Become Human and The Last of Us 2. "The Last of Us obviously is a game made by adults to be played by adults," Ryan commented. "I should never prejudge this but it will probably be rated ’18’, I think it’s fair to say. And there’s that market for those people who like that sort of game. Adults who like that sort of game."
