Riot blames Brexit for UK League of Legends price hikes

UK League of Legends players face a currency price hike thanks to the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.

Prices are being increased by 20 per cent after the Pound’s failure to remain strong and stable and recover its post-vote losses. The changes will come into effect on July 25th.

The cost of items themselves will remain the same, but the cost of currency itself will increase. This means that any currency purchased before the change will not lose its value.

5 used to get you 975 Riot Points. This will change to 790RP. 10 will drop from 2075RP to 1650RP, 20 from 4200RP to 3350RP, 35 from 7450RP to 5950RP and 50 from 10,700RP to 8600RP. A new 15 2525RP tier is also being introduced and the 2.50 tier is being retired.

Last June, the UK voted to leave the European Union, triggering a drop in the value of the pound relative to other global currencies, particularly the US dollar. This change meant that while UK players were spending the same number of pounds on RP as before, players elsewhere in the world were paying a lot more in comparison,” Riot explained.

Like a lot of companies who sell digital content, we monitored the situation closely over several months to see whether the pound would recover, but it’s been over a year now and we feel we’ve reached the point where a price change is necessary to restore parity.

The result of the change will be that whenever a player in the UK buys RP from 25th July onwards, they will receive roughly the same amount that they would get if they exchanged their money into dollars and bought RP in North America.”
