Developer Cliff Belszinski has said that his next shooter will not be a free-to-play title after all.
LawBreakers was announced last year. But despite some positive noises about the payment model to begin with, Bleszinski has said that the negative reaction to F2P has led to change of heart.
"We didn’t really want to go down that well of buying energy or a lot of the sleazier techniques that feel like they’ve taken over a lot of free-to-play," Bleszinski said at a GDC panel, as reported by Eurogamer.
"A lot of core gamers still have this wincing reaction when you suggest that something’s free-to-play, because they feel like they’re going to get ripped off. At the end of the day, there’s got to be a halfway point between completely free-to-play and sleazy, and $60, day one, disk-based."
Also changed is the game’s looks. Upon its reveal is boasted a colourful, almost cartoonish visual style. However, with upcoming multiplayer shooter Overwatch and Battleborn going for the same thing, LawBreakers has toned down the toon and introduced a more realistic art style.
Added Cliff: "Being constantly compared to the current slew of colourful shooters on the market made us realise we needed to stand out from the crowd.”
