Still the leading category on both iOS and Google Play – even ahead of Pokémon Go’s launch

Games grow 22 per cent on mobile in Q2 2016

The mobile games industry continues to grow, with downloads far outstretching those in any other category.

VentureBeat got an early glimpse at a new report from Sensor Tower that shows the games sector grew by 22 per cent across iOS and Google Play in the three months ending June 30th. Games category remained the leading category on both marketplaces.

Because the report only takes data up to the end of June, this means the growth does not count the worldwide success of Pokémon Go, which debuted on July 6th.

The report goes on to show that games racked up a whopping 359 per cent more downloads than the second biggest category – tools – on Google Play. Games reached 5.23bn downloads, while tools managed 1.14bn.

Similarly, iOS games achieved 1.83bn downloads for Q2 2016, ahead of 502m for photo and video apps – a difference of 265 per cent.

The most popular game for the three-month period was Slither.io, which managed just over 80m downloads across iOS and Android. Other games in the Top 20 most popular apps included Subway Surfers, Piano Tiles 2 and Clash Royale.
