With two massive digital releases dominating August’s charts it is no surprise that this was a big month for digital spending.
According to SuperData Research sales of digital games and microtransactions hit a total of $6.1 billion in August, which is an increase of 11 percent compared to August 2015.
As reported by VentureBeat League of Legends, Overwatch and Clash of Clans continued to be the big contributors to this figure, but both Pokmon Go and No Man’s Sky increased digital spending significantly.
In the top grossing digital games chart for PC, No Man’s Sky came in at number six for the month of August, beating the likes of World of Tanks, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. On console it was even better for Hello Games, as No Man’s Sky only lost out to Call of Duty: Black Ops III.
As you would expect it was Pokmon Go that dominated the mobile chart, beating all of the big players such as Clash of Clans, Clash Royale and Candy Crush Saga.
A batch of successful releases across console, PC, and mobile drove double digit year-over-year gains in market growth,” said SuperData analyst and chief executive officer Joost van Dreunen. Pokmon Go pushed the mobile market to $3.04 billion in revenue. [That’s] 16 percent higher than the same month last year.”
