Location-based game is now played in more than 100 countries

Pokémon Go surpasses 500m downloads worldwide

Its community of active players may be dropping, but that’s not stopping Pokémon Go from reaching new milestones.

The Pokémon Company and developer Niantic announced last night that the mobile game has been downloaded more than 500 million times around the globe since it first launched in July.

The title previously set a new record for the most downloads in its first week of launch, although the number of players has fallen significantly in the last few weeks.

During Apple’s iPhone 7 event in San Francisco yesterday, Niantic announced Pokémon Go would be coming to the new Apple Watch Series 2, which has a built-in GPS. The wearable Pokémon Go Plus gadget will also be launching this month.

“The phenomenal success of Pokémon GO during the brand’s 20-year celebration is an incredible reminder of how many people around the world love Pokémon,” said Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company.

“The team at Niantic developed a unique experience that merges their expertise in cutting-edge location-based technologies with the beloved characters and classic gameplay of Pokémon. This ideal match of the right brand and the right technology has resonated with hundreds of millions of existing and new fans around the world.”
