Want to know what you’re up against if you choose to release on iOS? Help appears to be at hand.
PocketGamer’s App Store metrics tool has been counting iPhone and iPad launches since the Store hit 10,000 apps launched in late 2008.
Eight years on, that number is much, much higher.
In fact, PG.biz reckons that 2.5 million apps have launched since the App Store began, with 2.3 million of these remaining active to this day.
The total is split between over half a million publishers and developers.
Digging down into monthly figures, the number becomes even more daunting.
Since the beginning of March, 4,741 games have launched on iOS– that’s equivalent to nearly 500 (474) every day.16,384 hit the App Store during February, for a daily average of 565.
Non-gaming apps are more prevalent, with 1,280 hitting the App Store every day, for a grand total of almost 13,000 monthly releases.
The average app price sits at just over a dollar, at $1.13. Games cost less than half of that, with an average of just 55 cents (39p).
This can arguably be subscribed to the massive number of free-to-play games, as well as those aiming at the $1/79p figure.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, games is the most popular category of apps, with more than 500,000 active titles.
Second is business, with half of that – 231,037, followed by education (231,037), lifestyle (194,933) and entertainment (124,244).
Take a closer look at the latest App Store stats over on PocketGamer.biz. (Thanks, Gama.)
EDIT: The original version of this story said that 4,741 games had been launched on the App Store in the last month. That figure instead represents games released since the beginning of March. The text has been updated to clarify this.
