In an interview with Esports Pro, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime has said that the company believe that “esports is going to continue growing.”
Morhaime has also said that he ‘loves esports’, and although he watches many of the big events for Blizzard’s titles, he’s still a “huge” Starcraft 2 fan.
“I get out to Korea periodically, so I try to get to the Starcraft 2 GSL tournaments, the OGN Apex League is also really awesome. I try to keep up on stuff. There’s a lot going on, so it’s tough to keep up on everything. The HGC tournament this weekend is pretty epic.”
Later Morhaime was in the crowd for Fnatic’s 4-3 HGC Mid-Season Brawl victory over Team Dignitas. Morhaime has said that this passion drives a lot of the company to try and grow their esports efforts.
“We’re spending a lot of time right now getting ready to launch the Overwatch League and right now, the process is identifying the team owners that will participate in the inaugural season, so that’ll happen starting later this year. We’re very excited about the future of Esports and especially about what we could do with Overwatch League.”
